A hollow, carved by wind and time, perfectly aligned with the stars beyond. It felt like a moment made on purpose. A reminder that even in the roughest places, God is always creating windows of wonder.

I named this piece “The Rock and the Reach” because it speaks to both:
The grounding of truth.
The stretch toward mystery.

What lengths would you go to capture nature's beauty in a way it has never been seen before?

My journey began with a burning desire to photograph Craters of the Moon National Monument like never before. I wanted to capture the essence of this otherworldly landscape under the infinite canvas of the Milky Way. Hindered only by time and the distance to this remote location, my passion for photography and my determination to inspire through nature’s beauty, fueled my resolve.

The warm summer night embraced me as I arrived, the scent of fresh sage mingling with the earthy aroma of ancient lava fields. The sky, an inky black cloak, glittered with countless stars. The air was still, except for the distant hum of nocturnal creatures, and the sensation of the cool ground beneath my feet that grounded me in this surreal landscape.

Setting up my equipment was no small feat. The complexities of astrophotography require precise timing and perfect conditions. As I prepared my camera, doubts gnawed at me. What if I missed the perfect moment? What if the clouds rolled in or my equipment failed? The fear of failure loomed large, having traveled such a long way for this one shot. The internal struggle was intense, my heart pounding with each tick of the clock.

But as I looked up, the beauty of the Milky Way arching across the sky reignited my determination. The rock formations stood silent and majestic, their rugged outlines creating a stark contrast against the starry expanse. I took a deep breath, steadied my hands, and pressed the shutter. The wait for the long exposure seemed eternal, each second stretching my nerves tight.

Finally, the image appeared on my screen. The lava stacks, with the Milky Way arching above, looked like a scene from another planet. Relief and triumph washed over me. I had captured Craters of the Moon in a way that resonated deeply with my soul, and I knew this photograph would inspire others as it had inspired me. The experience was incredible and profound, a witness to the power of persistence and passion.
