In a world that often feels adrift, there is something unshakable about a lighthouse—anchored against the wind, bathed in light, standing as a promise to the wandering soul. This piece captures the hope of that promise—a radiant white beacon nestled on a bluff where wildflowers bow in praise, the heavens open wide, and the sea stretches endlessly like the love of God.
As the lightkeeper stands watch, so too does our Father—never faltering, never dim. Let this artwork speak peace into your heart and stillness into your home. It is a reminder that even in the storm, you are seen. You are known. You are guided.
Have you ever stood at the edge of the world, where the sea meets the sky, and felt the timeless pull of a place that has weathered more storms than you ever will?
It was one of those mornings where the world seemed to hold its breath, just long enough for me to catch it. I stepped out of the car, the cool coastal air wrapping around me like an old friend, crisp and damp with a hint of salt. The sky had just started to wake, with the soft glow of the sun peeking over the horizon, casting a gentle light across the rugged landscape. I felt the familiar excitement rise in my chest. Today was special—I was going to capture Yaquina Head Lighthouse in the quiet moments just after sunrise.
The lighthouse stood tall in the distance, its 93-foot tower stark against the soft pinks and oranges of the morning sky. Yaquina Head juts almost a mile into the Pacific, a rugged finger pointing westward, holding its own against the endless waves and winds that have battered it for over a century. It’s Oregon’s tallest lighthouse, a beacon of safety and hope, standing firm since 1872. I was here to capture its beauty, but also to soak in the experience.
I could hear the rhythmic crashing of the waves against the rocky shore below, their deep, resonant sound reminding me of the vastness of the ocean. As I approached, the breeze picked up, carrying with it the sharp tang of saltwater mixed with the earthy scent of the wet grass and moss-covered rocks. The seagulls were already awake, their calls echoing in the still air. Somewhere in the cliffs, I knew the Peregrine Falcons were watching, perched above like sentinels over this wild land.
I set up my camera, hands steady despite the cold seeping through my jacket. The soft light of the rising sun bathed the lighthouse in a golden hue, highlighting the bricks that had weathered over 150 years of storms. Over 370,000 of them, each laid carefully to construct this symbol of perseverance. As I adjusted the lens, I imagined Head Keeper Fayette Crosby walking those 114 steps, lighting the wicks for the first time in 1873. How different it must have been then—the lighthouse powered by oil, its beam of light cutting through the darkness, guiding sailors safely to shore.
The breeze tousled my hair as I pressed the shutter, capturing the moment. I glanced up at the towering structure, its unique pattern of light—a quick flash, two seconds on, two seconds off, another flash, then fourteen seconds of darkness—had already switched on, though the daylight was creeping in. Today, the lighthouse is automated, powered by LEDs, but its role remains unchanged—steadfast and reliable.
As I waited for the next shot, I took a moment to just be. The ocean stretched endlessly before me, its surface dappled with morning light. I knew that beneath those waters, gray whales were making their slow journey, migrating to warmer seas. Maybe, if I was lucky, I’d see one. Or perhaps I’d spot a pair of bald eagles or the murres nesting along the cliffs. The natural beauty here is as constant as the lighthouse itself, wild and untamed.
Behind me, Cobble Beach was quiet, the dark, smooth stones that give the beach its name shining faintly in the early light. In just a few hours, visitors would arrive, eager to explore the tidepools, to peer into the tiny worlds teeming with life. For now, though, it was just me, the lighthouse, and the sea.
I took a deep breath, the cold air filling my lungs. There’s something about the coast that makes you feel alive. Maybe it’s the way the ocean stretches on forever, or how the wind and waves seem to whisper stories of the past. Or maybe it’s standing here, in the shadow of a lighthouse that has weathered more storms than I ever will, a silent reminder of resilience.
The shutter clicked again, and I smiled. I had my shot—no, I had more than that. I had a memory, a moment where the world slowed down just enough for me to capture it. And in that stillness, I felt connected—to the land, to the lighthouse, to the endless rhythm of the sea.
As I packed up my camera, I took one last look at Yaquina Head. Tall, proud, and unyielding, it stood guard over the coast, as it had for so many years. And for just a moment, I felt like I was part of its story too.
